Chap Leather: 

Good - Sides may vary in quality. May have some blemishes (possible brand in middle), but the price will reflect - 20 to 22 sqft. hides 

Great - Medium quality, mostly clean sides. Medium-sized and may have a blemish, but definitely something you can work around - 21 to 25 sqft. hides

Best - Highest quality sides. Minimal holes or brands and larger sides. Some larger sized hides may have a hip brand or small brand but due to the size it is a very useful piece of leather - 23 to 26+ sqft.

Belt strips cut out of 9/10 or 10/11 oz leveled skirting. Great weight for a single layer belt or can be doubled to make a great heavy duty belt. 

Belts 6/7 with a ⅔ or ¾ lining makes a great combination for a belt.
